|What is video modeling?
Video modeling is a teaching strategy that uses video recording and display equipment to create an example of a targeted behavior or skill. The teacher records someone (the “model”) engaging in the target behavior or skill. The learner then views the video and learns to perform the behavior or skill by imitating what he/she sees in the video.
Is video modeling effective?
Yes. Video modeling meets the evidence-based practice criteria established by the National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders. This means that reliable, independent, scientifically-based research studies conclude that video modeling is effective for some individuals on the Autism Spectrum.
What research confirms the effectiveness of video modeling?
Albert Bandura, an eminent research psychologist in social learning theory, concluded that children acquire skills when they watch other people perform those skills. He also concluded that for social learning to occur, a child must be motivated to learn and must pay attention to (“attend to”) the modeled behavior. Children are more likely to attend to a model who they can relate to.

Psychologists at Indiana University analyzed 23 studies of video modeling that were conducted between 1987 and 2005. They concluded that video modeling is an effective strategy for targeting social communication skills, functional skills and behavioral functioning.

What skills or teaching goals can be addressed with video modeling?
In evidence-based studies, video modeling was effective in the teaching domains of communication, social, academic/cognition and play. It may also be useful for teaching skills in the behavior domain.
In what settings can video modeling be effectively used?
In evidence-based studies, video modeling was used in school and home settings. It may also be useful anywhere the learner has access to viewing equipment, including health care or speech pathology clinics.
|This series is a core component of my ASD curriculum. The sci-fi component coupled with the video modeling has been very engaging for my students (and truly meets them right where they are).
